Care of Sheepskin Boots
Taking care of sheepskin boots is simple. All our sheepskins are 100% natural which means that unlike other cheaper man-made alternatives our Warmbat boots are very easy to take care of. However, they do like to be treated gently so please don't put them in the washing machine - if you treat them nicely they will stay looking as good as new and serve your feet well.
Sheepskin is naturally water resistant so if you get caught in a rain shower your feet should still remain dry even if the outside of the boot looks very wet. However if it is pouring with rain outside and showing no signs of stopping I wouldn't wear my sheepskin boots - I'd wear my Timberlands instead - not so fluffy but much more waterproof! To take care of sheepskin boots if you do get caught in a shower just leave them to dry naturally, away from direct heat and sunlight and they will be fine.
To Protect:-
I cannot stress strongly enough the importance of protecting your boots before wearing them! This is the simplest, most effective way of taking care of sheepskin boots in order to maximise their life!
To keep them looking at their best you must spray your new boots with a sheepskin or suede water and stain repellent before wearing them for the first time and again after cleaning them. Spray the entire boot lightly and evenly and leave to dry for about 20 minutes or so before spraying a second time. If possible you should then leave them to dry completely dry for 24 hours as the protector will become more effective with a longer curing time.
To Clean:-
Sheepskin boots should only be hand washed.
Even when you have lovingly taken care of your sheepskin boots there will probably come a time when you will want to clean them! Don't panic because the process is really very easy.
Your Warmbat boots are made from high quality real sheepskin and so are very easy to care for. They can be hand washed in next to no time and provided you use a special sheepskin shampoo or mild soap flakes they will be fine.
(Do be careful what you use though - I stripped the colour from a cheap pair of
sheepskin boots (not Warmbats!) by using too strong a detergent! So now I use the specially formulated
Woolskin Wash
shampoo and have had much better results!)
I've found the best method to use is as follows:-
1) Fill a basin full of lukewarm water and add some sheepskin shampoo. Stir the shampoo into the water (it won't foam very much but don't worry).
2) Dunk the whole boot into the water almost up to the top of the boot - try not to get too much water in the top of the boot unless you specifically want to wash the insides. (If you want to you can take the sheepskin insoles out and wash them separately - I've found this freshens the boots up without the need to wash the insides).
3) Using your hands just pour the water over the boot and massage them to clean - if they are very dirty I use a soft nail brush to gently scrub them - but do be careful not to damage the sheepskin's suede outer surface.
4) The boots can be rinsed either under running water or in a basin full of clean water (again lukewarm).
5) Squeeze the boots gently to remove the excess water and then blot the outsides and stuff the insides with kitchen towel.
6) They now need to be left to dry naturally - away from direct heat. You will have to be patient as this can take a few days depending on the ambient room temperature but please don't be tempted to put them on a radiator - they might go hard and you could permanently damage them.
7) If you like once the boots are completely dry they can be brushed to bring up the suede surface.
8) And don't forget to re-protect them once they are clean by spraying them with Sheepskin Protector.
If you take care of your sheepskin boots they will always look fabulous and you will too!
